Etsy remains one of the world’s largest specialized marketplaces for handmade, vintage and creative goods.
For publishers and sellers, the useful numbers are not random social-media claims about how many Etsy shops “make six figures.” The strongest statistics come from Etsy’s own SEC filings and investor materials.
The table below uses Etsy’s latest available Q2 2026 reporting.
Etsy statistics 2026: key numbers
| Metric | Latest reported figure | |—|—:| | Active sellers | 5.706 million | | Active buyers | 86.969 million | | Q2 2026 GMS | $2.583 billion | | Q2 2026 revenue | $668.3 million | | Q2 2026 marketplace revenue | $456.1 million | | Q2 2026 services revenue | $212.2 million | | Q2 2026 gross profit | $484.0 million | | Q2 2026 net income | $114.3 million | | Q2 2026 adjusted EBITDA | $195.4 million |
Figures above come from Etsy’s Q2 2026 10-Q and investor reporting.
How many Etsy sellers are there?
Etsy reported 5.706 million active sellers at June 30, 2026.
That was up 5.9% from the comparable figure Etsy presented for the prior-year period.
An active seller is not the same as a newly registered account or a seller who once listed an item years ago. Etsy uses its own active-seller definition in financial reporting.
That distinction matters whenever you compare third-party “number of Etsy shops” estimates.
How many Etsy buyers are there?
Etsy reported 86.969 million active buyers at the end of Q2 2026.
The company said active buyers improved sequentially during the quarter and were roughly stable year over year.
Etsy’s shareholder letter also said gross buyer additions accelerated 7.1% year over year, with growth in both new and reactivated buyers.
That suggests the marketplace’s buyer base was not simply static. Etsy was bringing in new and returning shoppers while trying to improve purchase frequency.
Etsy GMS in Q2 2026
Etsy reported $2.583 billion in gross merchandise sales for Q2 2026 on its continuing-operations basis.
For the Etsy marketplace standalone comparison, Etsy said GMS grew 7.5% year over year.
GMS is the value of goods sold through the marketplace, net of refunds and excluding shipping fees under Etsy’s reporting definition.
GMS is not Etsy’s revenue.
That difference matters. A marketplace can facilitate billions in product transactions while collecting only a portion through transaction fees, advertising, payments and other services.
Etsy revenue in Q2 2026
Etsy reported $668.3 million in revenue for Q2 2026.
The company broke that into:
- $456.1 million in marketplace revenue;
- $212.2 million in services revenue.
Marketplace revenue includes transaction-related monetization, while services revenue includes seller services such as advertising and other paid tools.
The split shows why Etsy’s business model is broader than a simple listing fee.
Etsy revenue take rate
Etsy reported a 25.9% revenue take rate for Q2 2026 on its continuing-operations basis.
Take rate is not identical to the fee percentage a seller sees on one transaction. It is a company-level ratio of revenue to GMS under Etsy’s reporting method.
It can reflect transaction fees, payments, ads and other monetization.
Sellers should use Etsy’s current fee documentation for actual listing-level cost planning rather than dividing the company take rate into one order.
Etsy seller growth in 2026
Active sellers reached 5.706 million in Q2 2026, up from the 5.388 million comparable figure shown in Etsy’s filing.
That is a useful signal for marketplace supply.
More sellers can mean more variety and more competition. But seller count alone does not reveal seller quality, revenue distribution or how many shops are full-time businesses.
Avoid the common mistake of dividing total GMS by active sellers and calling that “average Etsy shop revenue.” Marketplace activity is highly uneven, and active-seller counts contain businesses of very different sizes.
Our ecommerce revenue benchmark guide explains why simple averages can be misleading across marketplaces.
Etsy buyer trends
Etsy’s Q2 2026 shareholder letter highlighted three buyer-side levers:
active buyers, purchase frequency and average order value.
The company reported active buyers of approximately 87 million on a trailing-twelve-month basis and said gross buyer additions grew 7.1% year over year.
Etsy also noted improving 30-day repeat purchase behavior and slight sequential gains among habitual and repeat buyer cohorts.
For sellers, that matters because marketplace health depends on buyers returning, not only on one-time acquisition.
How many habitual buyers does Etsy have?
At the end of 2025, Etsy reported 5.9 million habitual buyers.
Etsy uses habitual-buyer metrics to track its most valuable buyer cohort.
In Q2 2026, Etsy said it saw slight sequential gains among habitual and repeat buyer groups for the first time since 2023.
That does not mean every habitual buyer spends the same amount, but it is a useful indicator of loyalty.
Etsy app share
Etsy reported that app GMS represented approximately 46% of Etsy marketplace GMS in Q4 2025.
App usage matters because mobile shoppers can behave differently from browser users in terms of frequency, discovery and notifications.
Etsy has continued investing in app experiences and AI-assisted discovery as part of its buyer strategy.
What is Etsy GMS per active buyer?
Etsy reported trailing-twelve-month GMS per active buyer of $121 at the end of Q4 2025.
That metric was down 0.5% year over year at the time, though the company said the rate of decline had moderated.
GMS per active buyer helps show purchase intensity across the buyer base.
It should not be confused with one shopper’s average order value.
Is Etsy growing in 2026?
Q2 2026 showed positive signs.
Standalone Etsy marketplace GMS grew 7.5% year over year in the comparison Etsy provided. Revenue grew faster, and active sellers increased.
Buyer count was roughly stable year over year but improved sequentially.
So the fairest description is not “Etsy is exploding” or “Etsy is dying.” The data shows a large mature marketplace that was improving several growth and engagement metrics during 2026.
Etsy marketplace vs Etsy Inc.
This distinction became more important in 2026.
Etsy sold Reverb in 2025 and completed the sale of Depop to eBay on July 30, 2026.
As a result, Etsy’s investor materials distinguish between continuing operations and standalone Etsy marketplace comparisons.
When using year-over-year numbers, check the reporting basis.
A clean statistics page should not combine Depop, Reverb and Etsy marketplace figures without explaining what is included.
What do Etsy statistics mean for sellers?
The marketplace is still large enough to support meaningful demand, but 5.7 million active sellers also means competition.
A seller should not use total marketplace growth as proof that any product will sell.
Successful Etsy decisions still depend on niche demand, product differentiation, photography, pricing, reviews, shipping economics and search visibility.
Marketplace-level statistics describe the environment. They do not replace product-level research.
Etsy statistics that should be treated cautiously
You will often see claims such as:
- “the average Etsy seller earns X”;
- “X% of Etsy shops are profitable”;
- “most Etsy sellers make a full-time income”;
- “the average Etsy store makes Y per month.”
Unless the claim comes from a transparent dataset with methodology, sample size and date, be skeptical.
Etsy’s SEC filings give reliable company and marketplace totals. They do not publish a universal median seller income that can be applied to every shop.
Etsy statistics summary
The 2026 picture is clear:
Etsy remains a marketplace with tens of millions of active buyers and millions of active sellers. Q2 2026 marketplace activity improved year over year, and the company reported better buyer trends.
For sellers, that means opportunity still exists, but the market is mature enough that generic products and weak listings face serious competition.
For analysts, the key is to separate marketplace GMS, company revenue, buyer count and seller count instead of blending them into one “Etsy size” number.
Etsy seller economics: what the platform totals do not tell you
The marketplace numbers are large, but they do not reveal the distribution of seller outcomes.
Five million active sellers do not mean five million full-time businesses. Some shops are occasional side projects. Others are established brands with staff, advertising budgets and thousands of orders.
The same problem appears in GMS. Dividing Etsy’s total marketplace GMS by active sellers would produce a mathematically valid number but a commercially weak benchmark because seller sales are not evenly distributed.
For a seller evaluating Etsy, the better questions are:
- How much search demand exists for the niche?
- What price range do comparable products achieve?
- How many strong sellers dominate the category?
- How expensive is fulfillment?
- What share of the order value disappears into marketplace, payment and advertising costs?
- How often do customers buy again?
Those variables determine the viability of one shop far more than the marketplace-wide average.
Etsy marketplace concentration and competition
A mature marketplace tends to reward accumulated reputation.
Sellers with strong reviews, a deep catalog, attractive photography and a history of conversions can have an advantage over new shops. That does not make entry impossible, but it changes the strategy.
A new seller should not try to compete with the entire marketplace.
Narrow product positioning, clear personalization, niche use cases and strong merchandising can create a smaller competitive set.
Etsy’s seller growth tells us that supply is still expanding. That makes differentiation more important, not less.
Why active buyer count matters more than raw traffic
Marketplace traffic can look impressive while purchase behavior weakens.
Active buyer count is more useful because it measures shoppers who actually transact within Etsy’s reporting window.
Purchase frequency adds another layer. If the number of buyers remains stable but each buyer orders less often, GMS can still soften. If frequency improves, marketplace sales can grow even without a large increase in buyer count.
That is why Etsy management discusses active buyers, purchase frequency and average order value together rather than treating traffic as the only growth metric.
What sellers should watch through the rest of 2026
For the second half of 2026, four signals deserve attention.
The first is buyer reactivation. Etsy said reactivated buyers contributed to stronger gross buyer additions.
The second is repeat purchase behavior. Improvements there would strengthen the value of Etsy’s existing buyer base.
The third is marketplace GMS growth. A few quarters of sustained positive standalone growth would matter more than one strong comparison.
The fourth is seller growth. More sellers can expand selection while also increasing competition for search visibility.
For publishers, those are more defensible metrics than speculative claims about average shop income.
